This is my March Madness! In some ways the new league year reminds me of the Talking Heads song from 1980, \u201cOnce in a Lifetime\u201d, where the line, \u201cSame as it ever was\u201d is repeated over and over in the song. Yes, it is the same as it ever was in NFL pre-draft events, the Senior Bowl, the NFL Combine, the new league year, NFL free agency, college pro days, private workouts and NFL team visits, draft rumors and lies, the hype, and then the NFL Draft. I do love the whole process. The NFL off-season is the same as it ever was, thank goodness!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Senior Bowl<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/orphan-marketplace\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"291\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/orphanteams.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t really watch the Senior Bowl, but I do read articles and listen to podcasts that live for it. These sources sometimes turn up a sleeper or two to put in your back pocket. The Eagles and the Saints were coaching staffs for the 2026 Senior Bowl. On day three of the NFL draft, I like to see if either team drafts any offensive skill players that played in the Senior Bowl. If they do, I usually look to draft them in the 4th or 5th round of fantasy rookie drafts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The NFL Combine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s talk about the NFL Combine, better known as \u201cthe Underwear Olympics.\u201d Let\u2019s see how fast someone can run in a straight line, no resistance from a defense, and no pads. Or, let\u2019s watch a QB throw passes with no pads on and no defensive rushers to a WR that is not being covered. Useless activities in my opinion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years ago, I was obsessed with watching the NFL Combine. I watched the drills with a keen eye, trying to gain an advantage in the rookie drafts by finding that hidden sleeper. Since then, I have learned that it is a waste of my time. I have concluded that, \u201cit just doesn\u2019t matter!\u201d What matters for assessing rookie fantasy talent is the player\u2019s&nbsp; college film and the actual NFL Draft capital. Draft Capital is where NFL teams show their true feelings about a player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just to drive home the point about how I feel about the NFL Combine, here is a YouTube clip of Bill Murray, \u201cIt Just Doesn\u2019t Matter&#8221; in the movie Meatballs:<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3FlOtHsOL6M?si=Dmv_8VI1r4STHkBz\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prime examples of why the NFL Combine doesn\u2019t matter:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John Ross<\/strong> &#8211; 9th overall pick (2017) \u2013 Cincinnati Bengals &#8211; before the NFL Combine, he was projected as a late 1st round pick. That 4.22 40 time did not translate to the NFL and did not pay off for the fantasy rookie drafter that bought the hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Darrius Heyward-Bey<\/strong> &#8211; #7 overall pick (2009) \u2013 Oakland Raiders &#8211; before the NFL Combine, he was also projected in the late first round. Same as above \u2013 bust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is most of us fell for it and ended up with a wasted draft pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coaching Changes &#8211; Offensive Improvements and Declines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I like the changes made by the Titans, Chargers, and Chiefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Titans added <strong>Brian Daboll<\/strong> to help <strong>Cam Ward<\/strong> move his skill set forward like he did for Josh Allen in Buffalo. Cam gets better, and all fantasy players should benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chargers added <strong>Mike McDaniel<\/strong> to move from an offense that was dull and predictable to an offense that should be explosive. Watch the rise of <strong>Omarion Hampton<\/strong> into a top back in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chiefs brought back <strong>Eric Bieniemy<\/strong>. I think <strong>Mahomes<\/strong> will jump right back to a must-have QB. Bieniemy and Mahomes like to chuck it deep; this will open the underneath routes and the running game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think the offenses for the Dolphins, Commanders, and Rams will decline this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dolphins lose <strong>McDaniel<\/strong> and add <strong>Bobby Slowik<\/strong>. The creativity drops and so does the fantasy numbers for <strong>Achane<\/strong>. Plus, no Tua, no Hill, and no Waddle. Look for them to draft a 1<sup>st<\/sup> round WR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Commanders bounced <strong>Cliff Kingsbury<\/strong> and promoted <strong>David Blough<\/strong>. He is a first time play caller, and I think he moves away from the Kingsbury Air Raid Style that we all love as fantasy managers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rams are in the same situation as the Commanders, but they still have <strong>McVay<\/strong>.&nbsp; I look for a slow start for some of the Rams players. I will look to see if I can trade for some Rams players that are slow starters come mid-season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Early FA moves and Trades to Boost Players<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Image of chief signing Kenneth Walker\" class=\"wp-image-1352\" style=\"width:214px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Image-2.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Image-2-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kenneth Walker (RB)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kyler Murray<\/strong> signed with the Vikings to improve <strong>Jefferson<\/strong> and <strong>Addison<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kenneth Walker<\/strong> signing with the Chiefs will give them a stud RB. I hope he develops some hands \u2013 he could reach RB1 in 2026 for all RBs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Evans<\/strong> and <strong>Kirk<\/strong> solidify the WR group in San Francisco. These signings take the pressure off <strong>Rick Pearsall<\/strong> and make <strong>Brandon Aiyuk<\/strong> expendable if they choose to move on from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other risers &#8211; <strong>Alec Pierce, DJ Moore, Omarion Hampton, Travis Etienne Jr, Jaylen Waddle, <\/strong>and<strong> Isaiah Likely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: What teams do in the NFL Draft could trash this list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pre-Draft Invites<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-961\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.4992888417882142;width:345px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team-850x567.png 850w, https:\/\/www.dataforceff.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Draft-A-Team.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is always fun to see which offensive rookie skill players are invited to the team facilities. Sometimes you can foresee that trade might happen before or during the NFL Draft. For example, why does a team bring in <strong>Jeremiyah Love<\/strong> as one of their 30-40 invitees when they don\u2019t have a top 25 pick? I am a little nerdy on my part, but fun just the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Draft<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My strategy on the rookie draft is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I use the same site every year to give me an idea of the rankings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I look at some mock drafts and watch a small amount of tape on each of the top 24 ranked players.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I look at past rookie drafts from my leagues and try to judge who drafts for best available player and who drafts for roster needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then I create a draft plan for all my leagues.&nbsp; What are the picks I have worth? Can I trade them away for more value or do I stick and pick? Trade up or trade down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As far as watching films, at least watch enough film to see what the player looks like in a game situation. I also like to search for player comparisons. What former or current NFL player does this rookie compare to in size, game speed, and playing style?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I see value for about 17 players or 2.05 in 12 team rookie drafts.
